The former Chelsea forward has returned to English football at Anfield, with the Reds making him the most expensive player in the club's history

Mohamed Salah is “what Liverpool need” and an “intelligent signing” by Jurgen Klopp, according to Craig Bellamy.

The Reds have made the Egypt international the most expensive purchase in the club’s history, with a deal to acquire him from Roma set to cost them over £36 million.

Salah has prior experience of life in England, having taken in a frustrating stint at Chelsea before flourishing in Italy.

Salah can fast-track Liverpool's success

He showed in Serie A that he possesses the qualities required to be a top forward among Europe’s elite and Bellamy believes he will prove to be a shrewd investment at Anfield.

The former Liverpool striker told the club’s official website: “I remember watching him when he was at Basel and he looked a very good player.

“He deservedly got his move to Chelsea, it didn’t quite work out for him, but his spell at Roma was very, very good. He has pace to burn and looks to go in behind, which is what Liverpool need, and hopefully he’ll work out to be a very good signing.”

Salah will join an attacking unit at Anfield which already includes Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

He is being tipped to offer something a little different to that trio, with the 25-year-old expected to make a similar impact in his debut campaign to that enjoyed by Mane in 2016-17.

Bellamy added: “What I like about him is that he’s always looking to get beyond and get behind the full-back and that’s really what they need.

Klopp: Salah can win big trophies

“Coutinho, Firmino, they come towards the ball a lot, which is great because they’re excellent players and they make things happen, but you need runners.

“Mane made such a big difference because he was always looking to go in behind, so for me it’s an intelligent signing, a signing of the type of player they really need at this moment.”

Salah netted 34 goals in 83 appearances for Roma, with the 2016-17 campaign seeing a personal best return of 19 efforts in all competitions complemented by 11 Serie A assists.
