Ngcongca vows to use his European experience to help Sundowns defend PSL title

Ngcongca could finally make his PSL debut when the Brazilians visit Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday

After six months on the sidelines through injury, Mamelodi Sundowns defender Anele Ngcongca could finally make his long-awaited PSL debut away to Phunya Sele Sele.

“Every player wants to be on the field,” Ngcongca told The Star newspaper.

Ngcongca bemoaned the timing of his injury, and admitted that it was painful watching his teammates from the stands in the first of the season.

“I got injured at the wrong time, joining a new club. It was painful watching the guys from the stands. I wished that I was playing with them. I supported them. Now, we are trying to defend the league together,” Ngcongca said.

The 29-year-old is aware that he faces an uphill battle breaking into the starting eleven. He has Asavela Mbekile, Thapelo Morena and Siyanda Zwane as his competitors for a place at right-back.

“A team like Sundowns has quality players in all departments. I have to fight for my position, but I bring experience from Europe,” Ngcongca said.

Ngcongca said he aims to get back to the level he was whilst playing for Genk in their 2010/11 title-winning campaign. Back then, he started every single match as they went to clinch the Belgian league title.

“When I came home, I told myself that I am coming here to be consistent, help Sundowns and share my experience of playing in Europe for 10 years. I want to get back to the level I was in 2010,” Ngcongca concluded.
