New Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mosa Lebusa has disclosed that he was open to staying with relegated Ajax Cape Town

The Urban Warriors were relegated to the National First Division (NFD) from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) following a disappointing 2017/18 campaign.

Lebusa, who was the Ajax captain, was then sold to reigning PSL champions Sundowns during the current transfer window.

The 25-year-old player has revealed that leaving the Mother City side for the Tshwane giants was not his decision.

“I think it was between the two teams Ajax and Sundowns – they spoke about it (his transfer) and here I am (at Sundowns)‚” said Lebusa during an interview on SABC’s Sports@10.

The defender would have been happy to stay at Ajax and helped the team win promotion back to the PSL if it was up to him.

“I wouldn’t have minded going down with Ajax to the (National First Division) since my whole professional football career I’ve been playing for them,” he continued.

“I would have gone there and fought for them,” Lebusa, who was nurtured in the Ajax academy, added.

Lebusa is sad to see the Urban Warriors go down to the second tier of South African football.

“It’s very painful to be honest. You know coming from the youth structure in 2009 and when that happened‚ you think about the boys in the youth [structures],” he explained.

Lebusa, who scored four times in 28 league matches for Ajax last season, explained why the 2015 MTN8 Cup winners struggled last season.

“I think we started off badly. Even in the previous seasons we did that, but we got away with it a couple of times. But this time it was different,” he added.

“By the time we realised that we were actually digging our own graves it was too little too late,” concluded Lebusa.
