Moeti: Manyisa can make Orlando Pirates tick again in an advanced midfield role

Goal caught up with the former Bucs captain, who discusses the team's best central midfield pairing

Orlando Pirates legend John Moeti says the club's current captain Oupa Manyisa should not be used as a central defensive midfielder.

The 28-year-old Manyisa has been regarded as a box-to-box midfielder for most of his career in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Retired central midfielder Moeti feels that technically gifted Manyisa and hard-tackling Issa Sarr are Pirates' best central midfield duo and they should be played together.

"For me, Oupa and Sarr make a good central midfield partnership. They compliment each other in the midfield," Moeti told Goal.

"Sarr is still one of the better holding midfielders at Pirates in my opinion, while Oupa is more of a creative midfielder," he said.

"I do not believe that Oupa is a natural ball winner in the midfield like Sarr. Oupa performs very well when playing as a creative player in the middle of the park," he added.

"This was evident when Oupa was playing with (Andile) Jali in the central midfield at Pirates a few years ago," Moeti continued.

"Jali is a natural ball winner and that allowed Oupa to focus more on creating chances for the team. That was great a combination," he explained.

"You will see the best of Oupa when he's playing as a creative midfielder and there's good cover for him," Moeti concluded.

Pirates coach Kjell Jonevret has been using Sarr as the holding midfielder, with Manyisa playing in an advanced role just behind the main striker.

Bucs have played eight matches - winning three, drawing four and lost one since the Swedish tactician, who arrived two months ago.
