Mkhitaryan been dreaming of joining 'favourite team' Arsenal for years

The saga of Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan continues to drag on, but the Armenia international might well end up joining the club he has claimed to support in the past.

Goal understands that Mkhitaryan is keen to receive a pay-off from United to join the Gunners as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez, who could move the other way, and that the deal has stalled as a result.

However, Mkhitaryan, who has fallen dramatically out of favour with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, has previously professed his love for the Gunners.

Speaking to UEFA's official website in 2009, when he was contracted to Armenian club FC Pyunik, Mkhitaryan said: "My favourite team is Arsenal.

"I like their attacking play and fast style. Moreover, Arsene Wenger puts faith in young players while demanding results at the same time. I like that and want to play there one day."

Mkhitaryan's agent, Mino Raiola, has confirmed that the former Borussia Dortmund star is integral to United's pursuit of Chile international Alexis.

"Manchester United are not going to sign Sanchez unless Mkhi agrees to join Arsenal," Raiola told  The Times .

"Mkhi is going to do what is best for him. He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract, so it's his decision."
