The Argentine legend admits his long-term struggles with drugs began during his time at the Catalan club and that he wishes he had never taken them

Football legend Diego Maradona has further opened up on his problems with addiction, claiming that taking drugs was the worst decision he has ever made.

'Payet has no spine!'

The Argentine icon admitted that his habit started at Barcelona in his early 20s, with the problem having continued to plague him until well after his playing career had ended.

After finally conquering the addiction in 2004, Maradona credits God with helping him beat his demons.

“I was 24 when I started taking drugs. I was at Barcelona,” he told Canale 5. “It was the biggest mistake I've ever made in my life.

“My daughter asked me to live for her while I was in a coma. I thank God because he listened to her and woke me up.”

When asked whether money, women or drugs posed the biggest problem throughout a colourful and controversial career, Maradona was unequivocal.

“Drugs were the biggest problem – drugs kill.

“I'm very fortunate to be here speaking to you. If I had continued I would have died. No doubt.

“I haven't taken drugs in 13 years now and I feel great.”
