Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs shocking Old Trafford record gives Mourinho hope

Manchester United v Tottenham
The Red Devils have some serious home ground advantage

If there's one thing capable of making Jose Mourinho smile right now, perhaps it's Tottenham's abysmal record at Old Trafford ahead of a crunch clash for the Red Devils.

Manchester United must bounce back after a shock 3-2 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion with a home match against Spurs set to offer them a historically easy route back to the winner's circle.

No Premier League side has ever lost more away games at any venue than Tottenham has at Old Trafford with Mauricio Pochettino's side losing 21 games to date at United's holy ground.

The Red Devils have in fact lost just twice at Old Trafford to Spurs in the Premier League, winning their last four encounters on home soil against them without conceding a goal.

Mourinho's men however had their defensive frailties exposed by Brighton last time out and will have to bank on more than home ground advantage to keep Tottenham at bay.

Though themselves failing to keep a clean sheet this season, Spurs have scored five goals across two games and are bolstered by Harry Kane finally lifting his August hoodoo.

The striker struck his first August goal against Fulham and has two more goals to his name against top-six opposition than Romelu Lukaku despite playing 2008 fewer minutes.

Also in Kane and Tottenham's favour is United keeper David de Gea - with the Spaniard in an unusually poor patch of form having conceded 10 goals from the last 14 shots he's faced in the Premier League and at the World Cup.

If Mourinho's pre-season disposition is anything to go by, all is not well behind the scenes at Old Trafford but the sacred stadium could be set to work its on-field magic again when Tottenham come to town.

With Manchester City threatening to march towards consecutive titles, United will be desperate to show they can keep pace early with their fierce rivals and Spurs will certainly force them to lift their game.
