Liverpool 'disappointed and angry' in Flanagan after assault conviction

Liverpool have expressed their "disappointment and anger" in Jon Flanagan after the defender was convicted for assaulting his girlfriend.

Flanagan, 25, was given a 12 month community order and 40 hours unpaid work, including 15 rehabilitation days after he pleaded guilty to the attack.

CCTV footage showed that Flanagan hit girlfriend Rachael Wall, pushing her against a wall and kicking her outside a restaurant in Liverpool city centre on December 22, 2017.

And the England international now faces further disciplinary action from his club, who condemned the defender's actions and confirmed they will begin internal proceedings now that the case has been settled.

“We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the player’s actions during the events that took place resulting in this criminal conviction,” a spokesman told The Daily Telegraph .

“It leaves his own reputation damaged and, through association, he has severely let down the club he had previously represented with distinction.

“We have expressed to him our disappointment and anger that he has failed to live up to the values of Liverpool Football Club, in this specific instance.

“The club has allowed the legal formalities to reach a conclusion before deciding on or implementing any internal disciplinary action. That internal process will now begin.”

Flanagan has made 51 appearances for Liverpool since his debut in 2011 but has featured just once for Jurgen Klopp's side this season.
