We hope you had a good time following along with the blog and enjoyed what may be a new dawning in a post-Messi and Ronaldo era.

Congratulations to well-deserved wins for Luka Modric, Didier Deschamps, Marta, Thibaut Courtois, Mohamed Salah and Reynald Pedros, and Gareth, if you're listening – WAISTCOAT.

Ta!

Was Salah snubbed?

2018-09-24T20:56:05Z

The Eygptian was named in the top three of the Best Men's Player award but somehow failed to make it into the FIFA FIFPro XI – in favour of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi (who didn't make the shortlist) and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Modric: "My dreams have come true"

2018-09-24T20:36:04Z

Modric responds to being the first winner since Kaka in 2007 who isn't Messi or Ronaldo.

"I'm not thinking about that right now. There are so many great players in the world, like the two you mentioned. It makes you feel proud, that your work is paying off. With this, all my dreams have come true!"

Ronaldo and Messi show lack of grace with award no-show

2018-09-24T20:28:03Z

Chief correspondent Pete Staunton writes on how the pair let their game down by their absences at the FIFA Best Award ceremony this evening, despite being nominated for the top honours.

Football legends take swipes at Messi & Ronaldo for snubbing ceremony 😳

2018-09-24T20:20:55Z

Fabio Capello, Diego Forlan and Davor Suker criticised the striking pair for missing the awards ceremony in London.

"The absence of Ronaldo and Messi? It is a lack of respect, for the players, for FIFA and for the world of football," Capello told TVE ahead of the ceremony.

"It's a pity. Messi attended the gala last year and he didn't win," added Forlan. "It's a pity if it happens the same with Ronaldo than in the UEFA gala."

Ronaldo famously chooses to opt out of attending award ceremonies in which he doesn't claim the top prize – failing to appear at the UEFA Player of the Year ceremony in Monaco after Modric won the award and only turning up at Ballon d'Or ceremonies that involve him as the winner.

Has Modric been messaging Ronaldo about the awards?

2018-09-24T18:22:21Z

"No!" Modric laughs. The interviewers are not convinced.

"He takes these awards seriously, doesn't he?" they ask him. He remains silent, but does laugh.

Salah: "This won't be my last award!"

The Real Madrid midfielder is a frontrunner to win tonight's Best Men's Player following the glaring absence of a certain CR7 (👀).

If Modric wins this evening, it will be the first time since Kaka lifted the honour in 2007 that someone other than Messi or Ronaldo has won the award.

It's the one and only Patrick Stewart!

Can Real Madrid win an unprecedented fourth Champions League trophy in a row?!

"Well I'd love to have a Champions League, so maybe we can make it! I think we have a great team who can win it."

It's Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba!

2018-09-24T17:39:49Z

"It's amazing to be here to see all these guys who you used to play with!" said the former Chelsea forward on the Green Carpet. "Where is better to celebrate football than London?

"Gareth Bale's goal is the kind of goal that you dream of, when you sleep at night before a game. You remember it forever.

"What Lukaku is doing now has nothing to do with me! He's going to destroy the Premier League. If he stays there, he'll catch up with Aguero who's doing so well. He's got time and talent."

Where's your waistcoat, Gareth?

🍿Video: Ronaldo, Modric & Salah in quest to be The Best

2018-09-24T17:19:43Z

While we wait for Idris Elba to grace us with his presence on the Green Carpet, why not pass the time by watching Omar Momani's brilliant GOALTOONS cartoon ahead of the ceremony – starring Ronaldo as the Evil Queen, Mohamed Salah as Snow White and Sergio Ramos as the hunstman!

A quick run-down of the Men's Award nominees tonight

2018-09-24T17:13:20Z

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Best Men's Award for the last three years, but looks like he – and former La Liga rival Messi – are absent for tonight's festivities.

Messi was snubbed for the top-three of the Men's Award which consists of Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah and Luka Modric.

Antoine Griezmann, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe make up the rest of the longlist, though Modric is a clear frontrunner to pick up the award after captaining Croatia to the final of the World Cup as well as having a pivotal role in winning the Champions League with Real Madrid.

Also, Ronaldo missing out on the ceremony is a major hint that he won't be picking up the award – he never usually shows up to award shows that he loses out on!
