Larsen: Golden Arrows exceeded people’s expectations this season

Golden Arrows coach Clinton Larsen says that they have exceeded people’s expectations this season given that they are in their second PSL campaign since returning from the NFD.

“I think we have exceeded people’s expectations because it’s only our second season back from the National First Division (NFD) and we were once again not in a relegation fight,” Larsen told Goal.

Abafana Besthende made an immediate return to the top-flight last season and narrowly missed out on the top eight spot by finishing ninth.

“Maybe people thought with our young squad we would be fighting relegation, but that was not the case. With proper planning and support from the management we knew we could compete well this season,” he said.

The Durbanite, who is in his eight season as coach, conceded that they are on course for a memorable season by qualifying for the top eight and Nedbank Cup final.

“We still have a long way to go to qualify for the top eight. We still have a semi-final. So there’s a lot to play for the club.

“It could be a very memorable season for us should we qualify for the top eight and the final. I think this young team has got a lot of potential going forward,” Larsen added.

He also heaped praise on how goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede has taken his chance after the injury of Maximillian Mbaeva.

“Last season, Mbaeva played all the games. Gumede was quietly doing his work and waiting for his opportunity and he was fortunate to get it through an injury,” he continued.

“Since he has taken that jersey he has done well. Everybody has seen his performances. He has done well. He is only 23-years-old and has improved with every game.

“He has taken the opportunity and has been well supported by Mbaeva, Ricardo Goss and Lee Langeveldt,” Larsen concluded.
