La Liga new boys Girona enter Seydou Doumbia race

The Catalan side will rival the Lisbon giants for the services of the 29-year-old attacker

Spanish Primera Division side Girona have joined the race to sign Roma outcast Seydou Doumbia.

The newly promoted outfit are said to rival Portuguese side Sporting in acquiring the services of the Ivorian international.

Despite impressing while on loan at FC Basel last campaign, Doumbia remains nowhere near the technical plans of the Serie A outfit whom he joined from CSKA Moscow in 2015.

Sporting and Roma reached an agreement for the transfer of the 29-year-old before, but the move fell through after the parties failed to agree personal terms.

Portuguese publication, O Jogo, understands that the Green and Whites are still interested in making the former Newcastle United forward a Lion and are preparing an improved offer for his services.

The Primeira Liga giants are not alone though in the chase for the Elephants forward who scored 21 goals in 34 outings for Basel last season.

Primera Division rookies, Girona, are also reported to be in the hunt for a proven goalscorer and have set their sights on the Abidjan-born forward.

The Catalan side will play in the Spanish top flight for the first time in their history after finishing second in the Segunda Division.
