“I wish journalists and other people could stop calling teams that are in the professional ranks small clubs,” Mathe told Goal.
“I don’t think there is a small club. The fact that you have qualified to be in the PSL that shows you are man enough. The question is are you man enough, are you strong enough to sustain yourself to the level where you can win the championship,” Mathe said.
“English side Leicester City showed us that if you are man enough and you believe in yourself, then yes you can do it. The same applies to Cape Town City, we can’t call them a small club.
“I’ll tell you why we can’t call them a small club because it is those players that did well for Mpumalanga Black Aces last season. The majority of them are seasoned professionals so we can’t call them a small club. It’s unfair for those players,” he continued.
Mathe is also pleased to see them punching above their weight in their first year of existence after purchasing the franchise of Mpumalanga Black Aces.
“They have surprised us and they’ve won the Telkom Knockout Cup,” Mathe concluded.
