JDT wave goodbyes to Guerra and Cabrera

The Super League champions part ways with attackers Gonzalo Cabrera and Gabriel Guerra as they look elsewhere for 2018 season.

Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) announced today that they will not be renewing the contracts of Argentine duo, Guerra and Cabrera.

Guerra was brought in during the pre-season before the start of the 2017 campaign but was initially assigned to Johor Darul Ta'zim II (JDTII). However, the poor form of Geronimo Barrales saw the two swap places and Guerra was moved to the Super League side.

Played predominantly on the wide berths, either on the left or the right, Guerra started out very brightly - becoming the shining beacon of attacking prowess for JDT as opponents struggled to keep a lid on his unorthodox dribbling skills.

However his performance in the second half of the season was in stark contrast to what he had produced before. Guerra became very subdued but still occasionally popped up with brilliant football as was shown in JDT's win over Perak that got them into the 2017 Malaysia Cup final.

Compatriot Cabrera was signed from Saudi Arabian club, Al-Faisaly FC at the start of the 2017 season. Like Guerra, Cabrera also operates mainly from the wider attacking roles, often finding himself in good shooting positions.

Compared to Guerra, Cabrera took a longer time to win over the fans as his style wasn't as spectacular as Guerra's. However slowly but surely, Cabrera won over the hearts of JDT fans with his consistent performances and scoring abilities.

Earlier thought to be the one to be retained of the two, the decision to put Luciano Figueroa on the playing staff seemed to have changed that decision. With Hariss Harun also on the brink of being re-signed, the only vacant spot left was an Asian import and Cabrera obviously did not fit the bill.
