Kunanlan at home with right back role and wants third Malaysia Cup triumph

S. Kunanlan is still excitedly looking forward to another Malaysia Cup final and looks to extend his winning run in the final.

Six years have gone by and Subramaniam Kunanlan is finally is another Malaysia Cup final. Tasting success with Negeri Sembilan back in 2011, Kunanlan is gunning for his third winner's medal in the oldest cup competition in Malaysia.

Back then Kunanlan was only 25 years old and played as a winger. It was his late goal in the final against Terengganu that got Negeri Sembilan back into the game before Hairuddin Omar secured the winner minutes as Kunanlan had scored the equaliser.

Now a Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) player, Kunanlan is one of the first names on the team sheet and he is likely to start in Saturday's 2017 final against Kedah. The gap between the two finals has also seen a change of position for Kunanlan, from a winger to a right back.

One which he wouldn't necessary have envisaged he would be turned into but ultimately one which he feels that he has adapted into and perhaps better suit his game now.

"It has never crossed my mind that position will change. But the opportunity came in a game when I had to cover for a team mate and I have been there since."

"For now, this position suits me more as I know that I can produce those late supporting runs that can help the attack.

"Malaysia Cup is a fantastic competition. We know in the final we can see a great atmosphere from the fans and that is something you don't see in a normal league game," Kunanlan told Goal.

Having recently been recalled back into the Malaysia national team for the series of qualifiers against North Korea, Kunanlan is desperate to join the national training camp as a Malaysia Cup champion and emulate his feat from 2011.
