ISL 2017: Mumbai City’s Lucian Goian - We are playing Bengaluru FC and not Sunil Chhetri

Mumbai City FC topped the Indian Super League (ISL) standings at the end of the league stage last season. The star player of the campaign was none other than centre-back Lucian Goian who impressed everyone with his positional and aerial presence.

He was the defensive mainstay of the team and Goian is pleased with the fact that Mumbai fans are pleased that he will stay with the club for another season.

“Superstar is too much for me. I give my best in training and games. After all this is our job. I do something normal. I’m happy people welcome me in Mumbai. I felt good last year. It’s a pleasure to come back. I’m confident but there is a need to do better this year,” said Goian.

Mumbai kept nine clean-sheets last season and Goian chose not to take the entire credit and quick to highlight the work done by his team-mates.

“Nine clean-sheets is a matter of pride. As a defender, you’re satisfied when the defense is working well. Defense is however, about all the 11 players as well. This is the credit to all the team members. We had a great work ethic. We have to keep going like that. I believe upfront we have players who can make the difference,” said the 34-year-old defender.

The Blue Army kick-start their ISL campaign against Bengaluru FC on the 19th at the Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore. Sunil Chhetri and Udanta Singh will don Bengaluru FC colours and Goian is confident that Mumbai can register three points from their first away fixture.

“Special plans to stop Sunil? I never make plans to stop a specific player. Of course, we still have some time to prepare everything. We are not going to play Sunil only; we are going to play a Bengaluru team. We are going to win,” he signed off on a positive note.
