Indian football: Sporting Clube de Goa player Avrhisto Fernandes commits suicide

Goan side Sporting Clube de Goa were left shocked after tragic news broke that one of their players Avrhisto Fernandes committed suicide on Monday morning.

According to the police, the 21-year-old had returned home from a party in the wee hours of the morning but an alarm was raised when he did not respond to his front door in the morning.

"According to what we got to know, he returned back from a party with friends and an alarm was raised when he was not opening the door in the morning. His body had to be removed by breaking open a window. The cause of the death is not yet known," Inspector Santosh S. Dessai of Saligao Police Station informed Goal.

Also confirming the tragic development, CEO of the club Victor Fernandes said, "I can only confirm that it is a suspected case of suicide. He was a very nice boy. In fact, he was very normal among his friends and also attended the midnight (New Year's) mass."

The demise of the player is a considerable loss to the Goan side whom he represented in the Goa Pro League. Avrhisto had featured for Sporting Goa at the Under-15 age group before joining SESA Football Academy for three years before eventually returning to Sporting as an Under-20 player. He made the cut to the senior side thereafter.

"He was a good player. He played in the Goa League last season and was one of our main players for the upcoming season too," remarked Sporting Goa coach Mateus Costa.

While reasons for the youngster to take such a drastic action are unknown, one is reminded of an extremely tragic news from 2006 when former India captain VP Sathyan committed suicide by jumping in front of a train over financial difficulties.
