Under the tutelage of the newly appointed Sankarlal Chakraborty, Mohun Bagan bagged their first win in four games this season as they got the better of defending champions Aizawl FC. Defender Masih Saighani was guilty of scoring an own-goal while Asier Dipanda struck the net in the 75th minute for the Mariners in a 2-0 result.
Reflecting upon the result, the visitors’ head coach Paulo Meneses stated that his troops were unfortunate to concede the opening goal and Dipanda’s strike crushed their hopes of a positive result. ‘’We had to play well against a big team and put up a good fight. The (offside) goal was unlucky for us and the second goal killed it,’’ he commented.
The Portuguese manager was displeased with the decisions of the linesman as he believed that Dipanda’s winning goal should have been flagged offside. Further, he expressed his unhappiness over the penalty decisions in the tournament which haven’t gone Aizawl’s way.
‘’The Bible says to be fair. The referee made not one, two, three but four mistakes. We have not been given a single penalty in I-League but should have got four. If you look at it, (Asier) Dipanda’s goal was two metres offside,’’ he remarked.
On the other hand, the Mohun Bagan gaffer was delighted with the all-important victory but believes that the Kolkata outfit still needs further modifications. Further, he explained the reason for the six changes made in the squad for Sunday’s face-off.
‘’The win is important but all departments need further improvement. The six changes were made for a reason. Kinshuk (Debnath) is a senior while (Cameron) Watson is new to the side. Watson was composed. However, he has not reached peak fitness and putting him in the team will take time,’’ expressed Sankarlal Chakraborty.
