Hope abounds for surviving Ghanaian contingent in Europe

The four remaining Ghanaian players in European competition this season have varying degrees of opportunities to reach the semifinals, following this week’s first leg quarter final matches.

Thomas Partey played for 15 minutes in Wednesday’s Uefa Champions League victory for Atletico Madrid against English champions Leicester City at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, while compatriot Daniel Amartey sat out the game for the visitors.

Partey was sent on in place of Fernando Torres to shore up the midfield and protect the lead for the hosts on 75 minutes.

Antoine Griezmann scored the lone goal from the penalty spot as los Rojiblancos took a slim lead to the second leg in England next week.

Kwadwo Asamoah watched from the bench as Juventus defeated Barcelona 3-0 at the Juventus Stadium in Turin.

Paulo Dybala grabbed a brace with Giorgio Chiellini scoring the third goal with a header from a corner kick as they stunned the visiting Catalans.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri left Asamoah out of the game and the Ghanaian would hope to be considered for the return leg.

Meanwhile, Frank Acheampong played the entire game as Anderlecht held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw in the Europa League quarter finals on Thursday at the Stade Contant Vanden Stock.

The Ghanaian was deployed as part of the attacking midfield trio that played behind Swedish striker Isaac Thelin. He started on the left.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored for the Red Devils in the first half but Leander Dendoncker equalized late on 86 minutes to deny Jose Mourinho victory.

The quartet should be high on the radar of new Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah ahead of naming his first team for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June.
