World champions France received a bloody nose over the weekend as they were eliminated from the UEFA Nations League, finishing second to Netherlands in Group 1, and will be eager to show their credentials on Tuesday against Uruguay in Paris.
The teams met as recently as July, when goals from Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann accounted for the South Americans in a World Cup quarter-final.
That result kicked off a poor run of form for Oscar Tabarez’s side, who will seek to bring an end to a three-match losing streak at Stade de France.

The France national team has not been used to setbacks in recent months, yet that is what they were forced to endure watching their TV screens as the Netherlands rallied late on in Germany to come back from a 2-0 deficit to claim victory and top their Nations League group, forcing the world champions out of the exit door.
While Didier Deschamps’ men might have cursed the uncharacteristic febrility of the Germans in Gelsenkirchen, they only had themselves to blame after a feeble display days earlier in Rotterdam, where they were beaten 2-0.
“From the moment that we fail to respect the fundamentals of football, lack aggression, intensity in our running and our passing, that we’re not ready to go into a duel or combat, you lose the essentials for making a performance at the highest level and it’s difficult to come back into a game,” captain Hugo Lloris explained.
“It’s difficult to see when this type of game is coming, especially when it’s a match of importance. We fell at the worst moment.”
Had it not been for Lloris, who made an astounding nine saves against the Dutch, the scoreline might have been much heavier, and as such a reaction is expected from France as they bid goodbye to what has been a memorable year.
Uruguay will provide the opposition, though the South Americans will be without a number of familiar faces because of injury problems.
They showed as they went down 1-0 to Brazil on Friday, though, that they remain as competitive and as determined as ever.
“With what we saw against Brazil, we saw that the spectrum of eligible players is wider than we imagined,” coach Oscar Tabarez said on the eve of France encounter, pleased with what his young players had produced at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.
He also pointed out that he wants his players to make the most of playing against such tough opponents as these are set to be limited in the future.
“It’s going to be harder and harder to play against teams like France now there is the UEFA League of Nations,” he lamented.
Uruguay are a nation with a tradition of battling the odds and they will be eager to showcase that in Paris.
