The transfer window may be closed, but Usuthu have continued to bolster their ranks in order to secure a top eight berth

AmaZulu have snapped up defender Tshepo Gumede as coach Cavin Johnson looks to shore up his backline.

Although, the transfer window is officially closed, Usuthu have continued to look forward as they have brought on board the former Orlando Pirates defender as a free agent.

Gumede was previously on the books of Cape Town City, but with competition at the club stiff, he eventually found himself in the South African football wilderness.

Nonetheless, Gumede’s move to AmaZulu will be a reunion of sorts considering that this is not the first time he will work under Johnson.

During Gumede’s previous stint with Platinum Stars, the two worked well together, and Johnson will surely relish the prospect to work with the 27-year-old again.

Meanwhile, Gumede himself is delighted to have completed his move and hopes to have an immediate impact.

“It has been a good experience for me so far training with the team prior to signing, this gives me another opportunity to establish myself,” the lanky defender told the AmaZulu club website.

“I’m looking forward to the new challenge and I’m happy that I’m joining a team that plays the kind of football that I like,” he added.

“Everyone here works towards a common goal, and that makes things easier,” Gumede expressed.

“It’s a very warm and friendly environment that I’d like to add my contribution onto, by improving the team,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Gumede’s first call of action could potentially come against one of his former sides, the Citizens, this coming weekend. The KwaZulu-Natal outfit hosts Benni McCarthy’s men in what promises to be an intriguing encounter on Saturday night.
