EXTRA TIME: Thanda Royal Zulu secure PSL promotion

Amabhubesi are back in the elite league for the first time since suffering relegation from the PSL at the end of the 2008/09 season

Thanda Royal Zulu have secured promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after winning the 2016/17 National First Division (NFD) title on Wednesday.

This is after Amabhubesi defeated Stellenbosch FC 2-1 at Umhlathuze Sports Complex - with Khotso Malope and Michael Gumede scoring for the home side in Richards Bay.

As a result, Thanda are placed at the top of the log with 56 points, while second-placed Black Leopards have 44 points with three matches left.

Amabhubesi, who are under the guidance of Roger Sikhakhane, have been impressive this season - recording 15 wins, 11 draws and one defeat.

They relied on Mhlengi Cele for goals and the striker did not disappoint as he scored 16 goals in 23 league matches.

The PSL and former professional footballers congratulated Thanda on Twitter:
