South African referee Victor Gomes made headlines for all the wrong reasons as Golden Arrows beat Baroka 3-2 in a PSL match on Saturday afternoon.
With the scoreline already at 3-2, Gomes awarded a dubious penalty to Baroka which was coolly converted by Richard Matloga, but the man in the middle disallowed the goal, citing encroachment on the side of the visiting team.
Television replay showed that Gomes was wrong to disallow the goal, and his decision opened a can of worms.
Another last minute PENALTY for Baroka FC awarded by Viktor Gomes!
Baroka score but goal does NOT stand as "encroachment" ruling is applied — robertmarawa (@robertmarawa) May 13, 2017
Some called for Gomes to be suspended or even be banned from refereeing.
But these Victor Gomes is an attention seeker. Clubs are getting relegated bcos of his stupid mistakes. He must be removed as prof ref. — Kabelo Ramokoka (@kabzar) May 13, 2017
Now, the question is whether or not the South African Football Association (Safa) will do something about Gomes.
