England can win Euro 2016 - Hodgson tells players

The Three Lions have won all six of their qualifiers thus far and are preparing to face San Marino and Switzerland, and the former Fulham boss is in confident mood

England manager Roy Hodgson has told his players that they can win Euro 2016, according to Jonjo Shelvey.

Hodgson's men are currently preparing for qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland, with the Three Lions having won all six of their matches thus far.

England are missing the likes of Jack Wilshere, Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge ahead of the encounters but Shelvey has returned to the international fold and is in line to win his first cap since 2012.

And the Swansea City midfielder has now revealed that Hodgson has told his players that they can triumph in France next summer.

"He just said we can either go one way, keep winning and stay the way we are, or we can go up another level in our performances," he told reporters.

"Because there's no reason why the England team, with the players we've got, can't go to the European Championship and win it.

"That's what Roy Hodgson wants us to do - and what we want to do. It was quite an upbeat meeting. He wants us to win, and I'm sure we can."

Hodgson's contract expires after Euro 2016, and Shelvey believes that Garry Monk - his manager at club level - has the ability required to succeed the former Fulham boss.

"I think he can one day become England manager because he’s got all the abilities," Shelvey said.

"He loves to have every detail right. We do a lot of meetings off the pitch and he’s always on your case. For me, that’s what I need as a footballer."
