East Bengal sign Spanish defender Borja Gomez Perez

Spanish defender Borja Gomez Perez becomes East Bengal's fifth foreign signing for the 2018-19 season...

Kolkata giants East Bengal have announced the signing of 30-year-old Spanish defender Borja Gomez Perez for the 2018/19 I-League season on Thursday.

The official statement from the club read, “Quess East Bengal FC (QEBFC) announced that it has signed Spanish international footballer Borja Gómez Pérez for the upcoming football season.”

The Madrid-born defender is a product of Real Madrid’s youth season. He made his professional debut in 2007 with Segunda Division ‘B’ side AD Alcorcon in 2007 and spent three full seasons at the club. He has also plied his trade at Spanish clubs such as Rayo Vallecano, Granada CF, Hercules and Real Murcia.

The defender joins the Red and Golds from Segunda Division 'B' Group 1 club UD San Sebastián de Los Reyes.

Borja Gomez becomes the fifth foreigner at the club and second foreign defender after Costa Rican World Cupper Johnny Acosta Zamora. The other foreign recruits of the club are Mahmoud Al Amna, Katsumi Yusa and Kassim Aidar. The club is currently in negotiations to sign a foreign striker to complete their quota of overseas players.

The club has also roped in former Real Madrid Castilla coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia. Interestingly, Borja Gomez had played under Alejandro during his Real Madrid youth days from 2005 to 2007.

East Bengal are currently playing the Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Divison ‘A’. They are at the top of the league after picking up13 points from five matches.
