Earthquakes' Silva "fully responsive" and out of coma after swimming incident

San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Matheus Silva came out of a coma late Thursday morning and is now able to speak, the team announced Thursday.

The 20-year-old was left in critical condition after a swimming incident at Lake Tahoe.

San Jose's statement lays out the events of the day and says that Silva "is responsive and able to speak" and that the midfielder "is expected to undergo a series of outpatient cognitive and physical tests before being released from the Intensive Care Unit."

“We are incredibly excited and relieved to announce that Matheus Silva has awoken from his coma and is fully responsive,” Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli is quoted as saying. “The entire Earthquakes organization is grateful for the invaluable effort by the doctors, players and staff at Reno 1868 FC and bystanders on the beach that contributed to Matheus being alive and well today.”

Silva's current club, San Jose's USL affiliate Reno 1868 FC where his is on loan, also asked for help in identifying the bystanders who helped their player from the water. 

Silva is scheduled to begin physical therapy on Friday.
