Champions League Betting: Misfiring attacks lead to massive 194/1 payout on goalless night

Defence reigned supreme in the Champions League on Tuesday night as all four teams in action kept a clean sheet - resulting in a 194/1 (195.0) winner.

Liverpool dominated at home against Bayern Munich in their last 16 first leg tie but could not find a way through, whilst it was the same story for Barcelona in Lyon as they were also held to a 0-0 draw.

Backing a double of both games to finish 0-0 would have paid out at a whopping 194/1 (195.0) with bet365, which is little surprise considering the attacking talent on show in both matches.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, amongst others, both wasted multiple golden chances for the Reds, who mustered 15 shots in total but just two were on target as Bayern’s defence held firm.

At the other end, Robert Lewandowski largely failed to trouble Alisson, whose only real save came at point-blank range when Joel Matip’s attempted clearance was goalbound until it hit the Brazilian’s chest.

The 0-0 correct score at Anfield was priced at 12/1 (13.0) at bet365 whilst in France it was 14/1 (15.0).

Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s acrobatic save pushed Martin Terrier’s long-range effort onto the crossbar, whilst his opposite number Anthony Lopes made fine stops to deny Ousmane Dembele and Sergio Busquets in particular.

Those ties are now firmly in the balance and bet365 are unable to split Liverpool and Bayern Munich, pricing both at 10/11 (1.91) to qualify ahead of the second leg in three weeks. Barca, though, are just 2/7 (1.28) to finish the job at Camp Nou.

Backing a repeat of these results on Wednesday night will pay out at 81/1 (82.0), a stark contrast but aided by the fact that Juventus’ trip to Atletico Madrid is just 9/2 (5.50) to finish goalless.

The price on a 0-0 draw for Manchester City's trip to Schalke is 14/1 (15.0), which is understandable given that the Citizens have already scored 46 goals in 2019 whilst the Germans have just one clean sheet in their last nine games.

It is worth noting that the ‘no goalscorer’ selection is a safer route for bettors, as it pays out at the same price and offers protection if the game is settled by an own goal(s). An own goal is not offered as a scorer by bet365 so it falls under the no goalscorer selection.
