Despite speculation regarding his future, the Bafana Bafana legend still has one more season on his current contract with the Citizens

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has refused to give any assurances regarding his future at the club.

The former Uefa Champions League winner was thrown in at the deep end at the beginning of the season, coming in to replace Eric Tinkler at the helm. It has certainly been an unpredictable season for the 40-year-old who has endured several highs and lows which included a cup final berth in the MTN 8.

McCarthy also most recently masterminded the Citizens victory over his former club Orlando Pirates, ending what was a seven-game winless streak. City are currently in fifth position on the log with just one game remaining in the campaign.

While it has not been the worst of seasons, with City missing out on a top three finish and McCarthy failing to replicate the success of his predecessor, questions have arisen regarding his future in Cape Town.

Although, McCarthy believes that his maiden Premier Soccer League (PSL) voyage will hold him in good stead going forward, when pressed for confirmation that he will still be at City come the start of next season, McCarthy was reluctant to commit.

“But next season I will comeback one year wiser‚” he was quoted as saying by TimesLive.

“What I am saying is that I’ll be a year wiser and I’ve had an experience,” he added.

"I won’t be a first timer coach. I will have had one year of learning experience and what it’s like to manage a team‚ so next season," he continued.

“Don’t quote me on anything please because you know in football tomorrow things change very quickly‚ very suddenly. I don’t want people putting things in my mouth‚ saying ‘you say this’ and ‘you said that’,” he said.

“All I’m saying is that if I’m still coaching next season … if I’m there … then I’ll be a year wiser. So‚ I’ll have more experience‚ I would have known how to deal with things better in the boardroom‚ I would have known how to deal with things better in the dressing room‚ but everything this season was a novelty to me,” he explained.

“But please don’t make it sound like I’m saying that I’m not coming back or that I’m going on holiday. I’m not saying that I’m not going to be here or that I’m going to be here. But I have a contract so,” he concluded.
