Caf Confederation Cup Group B review: Al-Hilal winless run continues, leaders Berkane drop points

Al-Hilal’s Caf Confederation Cup woes continued as they surrendered a two-goal lead to allow Mozambican visitors UD Songo to force a 2-2 draw in Omdurman on Wednesday.

The Sudanese giants are still winless with just two points and in third position while this draw earned Songo their first point of the campaign as they remained stranded at the foot of the group.

Mohamed Bashir fired Al-Hilal into the lead two minutes into the game before Tanzania international Thomas Ulimwengu doubled their lead on his debut in the 36th minute.

The hosts seemed to be cruising to an easy victory but began crumbling two minutes before the break when Malawi international Frank Banda struck to reduce the deficit for the visitors.

The second half became a painful outing for Al-Hilal, who struggled to restore their two-goal caution with some missed chances, allowing Helder Pelembe to level matters three minutes before the final whistle.

Elsewhere, at Stade Municipal de Berkane, leaders RSB Berkane maintained their unbeaten run although they dropped two crucial points as they were held 0-0 by visiting Egyptian side Al-Masry.

Entering this third round of matches enjoying a 100 percent record, the Moroccans could not continue with their fine form in a game that witnessed a few chances from both sides.

Berkane however, consolidated their two-point lead at the top of the log ahead of second-placed Al-Masry who have five points.

Following the recent departure of former chief striker Ayoub El-Kaabi to China, Berkane were always expected to struggle upfront.

Togolese forward Kodjo Laba and his strike partner Youssef Essaiydy battled in vain and both could not finish the match as coach Mounir Jaouani sought the illusive search for goals.

The return leg in Egypt will see Al-Masry still facing the real possibility of seizing control of the group if they don't win.
