Court documents show the American billionaires had an opportunity to purchase the Reds in 2010.

American billionaires Bill Gates and Robert Kraft had the opportunity to purchase Liverpool in 2010, according to court documents.

Tom Hicks and George Gillett agreed to sell the Reds in April 2010, with Microsoft co-founder Gates and New England Patriots owner Kraft among those approached in a worldwide search for new ownership. Kraft also owns the New England Revolution in MLS.

The revelation came in documents made public by the New York State Supreme Court, New York County, as part of a legal battle involving U.S. hedge fund Mill Financial, Gillett and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

In a deposition, former Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton was asked: "Did you understand that there was at least an attempt to contact Bill Gates and Bob Kraft in the U.S.?" He responded: "Correct."

New England Sports Ventures — now known as Fenway Sports Group — ultimately bought Liverpool in October 2010.
