Betting: Huddersfield favourites for relegation despite busy transfer window

After defying the odds to earn a maiden promotion to the Premier League, David Wagner's men will have to upset the bookies again in order to survive

Having clinched their shock promotion with a penalty shootout victory over Reading in May’s play-off final at Wembley, Huddersfield Town have been working hard to prepare for their first ever season in the Premier League.

David Wagner’s men have repeatedly broken their previously modest transfer record to bring nine new signings to the club – with the most recent eight of those all happening in the space of a week.

As well as making the influential Aaron Mooy’s loan deal from Manchester City permanent, the Yorkshire outfit have raided the Championship for the likes of Tom Ince and Danny Williams, and brought in Steve Mounie, Laurent Depoitre and Mathias Jorgensen from across Europe.

Nevertheless, a team that was more widely expected to battle against relegation to League One than gain promotion to the top flight last campaign are now tipped for a tough season among the elite.

Despite their exciting transfer business, the Terriers are still priced at just 4/7 (1.57) with dabblebet to be relegated straight back down the Championship after just one year at the top.

In fact, Wagner’s men are clear 2/1 (3.00) favourites to finish rock bottom in last place, with second favourites Brighton and Hove Albion rated at a not inconsiderably lengthier 9/2 (4.50) .

Fortunately, this is unlikely to worry the German manager too much, having already upset the odds and some far wealthier rivals in last season’s Championship to even have the opportunity to play at this level.

With morale still high after their Wembley triumph and the anticipation building as the new signings keep on being announced, some optimistic Huddersfield fans may even be looking with more interest at the 12/1 (13.00) price on their side continuing to defy expectations and breaking into the Premier League’s top 10 next campaign.
