Benitez to assess Atsu ahead of Leicester City game

The Magpies boss has revealed that the Ghanaian is in good shape following an injury which has kept him out of action since November

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is hoping to have full complement of his team this week, ahead of their home fixture against Leicester City at the St James’ Park on Saturday.

The Magpies have been without Ghana midfielder Christian Atsu, who suffered a thigh injury against Bournemouth. Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett have also been battling with injuries and the former Liverpool coach is hoping to have them back to be able to recover from their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea last weekend.

"They’re closer, but we will see on Tuesday how they feel,” Benitez was quoted as saying by Birmingham Mail

“They’re getting better. I don’t know – we’ll see this week. Christian Atsu was very close, Dummett was very close and Jamaal was better, but we’ll see how he feels during the week [before our game against Leicester City],” he added.

Atsu has missed the club's last four games, as they picked only one point so far. In his absence, Matt Ritchie has been one of the wingers used but the youngster has failed to live up to the expectations.

Newcastle have dropped to 15th position with 15 points, two points above safety.
