Awoniyi on target as Anderlecht tame Royal Excel Mouscron

The Nigerian forward scored one as his team, behind by four goals, explored a comeback but were put off the balance late in the game

Taiwo Awoniyi was on target in Royal Excel Mouscron’s 5-3 loss to Anderlecht in a Belgian First Division clash on Sunday.

The Liverpool loanee’s seventh league goal of the season helped restore the hope of his side after they had gone four-goal down after 61 minutes.

Ryota Morioka opened the scoring for the hosts in the 26th minute before Lukasz Teodorczyk hit the visitors with a hat-trick to take the scoreline to 4-0.

However, Awoniyi’s effort in the 70th minute was followed by strikes from Benjamin van Durmen and Teddy Mezague to reduce the deficit to one but Morioka’s late effort put the game beyond Frank Defays’ men.

Awoniyi, 20, has now scored eight goals in 28 appearances across all competitions this season and will be looking forward to his side’s next encounter against Lokeren at Stade Le Canonnier on March 3.
