Following Sunday’s racist incident aimed at the Senegal international, La Dea have been penalised by the league’s authorities

Atalanta have been handed a one-game stand closure for racist chants against Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, which is suspended for a year.

The 26-year-old was a victim of racial discrimination during Sunday’s Serie A encounter at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia that ended 1-0 in favour of the Light Blues, thanks to Dries Mertens' second half effort.

The report confirmed that the incident occured at the Curva Nord Pisani stand of the stadium and that the one-game closure of the area will become effective, with added penalties, if fans commit a similar offence during the suspension of the sanction for one year.

“The Federal Prosecutor’s report indicated, among other things, that supporters of the club Atalanta, who were gathered in the Curva Nord Pisani section, were responsible in the 20th minute of the second half in the number of around 4,000 [compared to the 8,068 occupants] and at the end of the match with the approximately 300 still present, of racial discrimination against the Napoli player Koulibaly,” read the disciplinary report.

“Considering that the chants were heard by all three of the Prosecutor’s observers, positioned in areas of the stadium which are distant from the area in question, and that the behaviour was large enough and clear enough, the conditions exist for sanctions under article 16 paragraph 2.

“It is therefore resolved that the club Atalanta will be obliged to play one match with the section known as the Curva Nord Pisani absent of fans, with the provision that the execution of this sanction is suspended for one year.

“This carries the warning that, if a similar violation is committed during this period, the suspension will be withdrawn and the penalty will be added to the one imposed for the new violation.”
