Amartey set for swift return to action on Wednesday

The Ghanaian could be selected to play against Derby County in midweek, a day after resuming club training, Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri has said

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has confirmed the availability of Ghana defender Daniel Amartey for Wednesday's FA Cup clash with Derby County, a day after reporting back from international duty.

The 22-year-old resumed club training on Tuesday after helping Ghana reach the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

He played full-time in the Black Stars' 1-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in the third-place playoff on Saturday.

“He is available [for Wednesday's encounter with Derby County]," Ranieri told said.

"He’s okay and I speak with him.

"I think he’s available because in the last match on Saturday, he played in Africa. Everything is okay.

“When we bought him, we knew he could play in different positions – central midfield, right midfield, right-back and centre-back.

"He’s a very universal player.”

Largely deployed in midfield at club level, Amartey played at centre-back in all six Ghana matches at the Afcon.

His exploits got him named in the Team of the Tournament.

Amartey joined Leicester from Danish outfit Kobenhavn in January last year, making five appearances as the Foxes won the Premier League for the first time ever last season.

He made 17 Premier League appearances this season before departing for the Afcon.
