Afobe nets brace as Sheffield Wednesday hold Stoke City

Benik Afobe scored a brace in Stoke City’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday in Saturday’s English Championship game at the Hillsborough Stadium.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee, making his seventh league appearance for Gary Rowett’s men, opened the scoring just two minutes into the clash.

Nigeria’s Oghenekaro Etebo and Senegal’s Mame Diouf combined well to feed Afobe who fired past goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.

The 25-year-old notched his second goal in the 22nd minute poking home from Steven Fletcher’s assist.

The Owls started a fightback before the break with Marco Matias halving the deficit.

With the game looking to end in favour of the visitors, Barry Bannan scored an 82nd-minute leveller to earn a point for Jos Luhukay’s men.

The draw ended Stoke’s two-game winning run after defeating Hull City and Huddersfield Town [League Cup].

Etebo, Diouf and Afobe were replaced by Darren Fletcher, Bojan Krkic and Peter Crouch respectively shortly before the end of the game.

The Congo DR international has now registered four goals this season and will be hoping to continue the fine form when they lock horns with Swansea City in their next league game on September 18.
