Malaysia have featured some line-up changes in their 2018 AFF Championship campaign, particularly on their right flank.

In their 1-0 opening day win over Cambodia last Thursday, right back Syahmi Safari and right winger Mohamadou Sumareh started the match together only for the second time.

The Selangor defender has been pushed up the pecking order in the competition squad due to first-choice Matthew Davies' injury, while the Gambian-born forward only made his debut for his adopted country in their October friendly match against Sri Lanka.

The two started a match together for Malaysia for the first time in their October 16 1-0 friendly match defeat to Kyrgyz Republic, during which they showed great potential together, combining well to threaten the opponents' final third.

However, on Thursday they were unable to combine as dangerously as they had earlier, in a scrappy game that was played on the synthetic Olympic Stadium pitch, in Cambodia.

"I can't say I played too well yesterday evening (Thursday), although it wasn't bad or anything like that.

"The artificial pitch made things harder for both sides, and we struggled to adapt. But in the end we got the three points, that's all that mattered," said the 20-year old when met by Goal on Friday in Phnom Penh.

But he is confident that his performance will keep improving in the tournament, as well as his combination with Sumareh, in order to keep his spot in the starting line-up.

"I've only been playing together with him (Sumareh) in three matches. Our understanding can only get better game-by-game.

"God willing, if the coaching staff place their confidence in me, I will repay their faith by proving myself and helping the team go far," said the utility player.

Malaysia's next Group A match is against Laos on Monday, November 12 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
