'A real captain' - Evra pays tribute to former rival Steven Gerrard

The Juventus star was one of many former foes to salute the Liverpool legend after he revealed his retirement, as he praised his leadership skills at Anfield

Steven Gerrard has enjoyed a host of tributes since announcing his decision to hang up his boots, and some have come from rather unlikely places.

The LA Galaxy man retired from professional football on Thursday after a glittering career, predominantly at Liverpool, where he became an Anfield idol.

And one of the most touching homages came from a former rival, as ex-Manchester United man Patrice Evra had warm praise for his old adversary.

"The most consistent English player, and a real captain!" the Juventus full-back wrote on his Instagram page, alongside of a photo of the two stars tussling in a United-Liverpool clash.

But Evra was far from the only former foe to pay his respects - the likes of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla all showered the Reds legend with praise.

It was a pleasure to play against a such a great player as you! #stevengerrard #legend
