The Roma keeper is determined to force his way back into consideration after being overlooked by Louis van Gaal since falling down the pecking order under Zdenek Zeman in Italy

Maarten Stekelenburg says he is determined to be Netherland's first choice goalkeeper at World Cup 2014.

The former Ajax man has had to settle for a place on the substitutes' bench of late, with Tim Krul the preferred man between the posts, but he has now stated his ambition to win back the N.o.1 jersey.

"I would like to be the first choice goalkeeper at the World Cup," the 54-time international told Algemeen Dagblad.

"I found it hard to watch the duels with Italy and Germany from the bench; I sat there for so long.”

Despite his disappointment, Stekelenburg understands the selection policy of Oranje boss Louis van Gaal.

"He always opts for the best players at the time," added the 30-year-old.

The Netherlands face Estonia on Friday evening in their latest World Cup 2014 qualifier.
