Ashley Cole 'overwhelmed' by England support after 100th cap

Ashley Cole has thanked England fans for their "overwhelming" reception as he picked up his 100th international cap against Brazil on Wednesday.

The Chelsea man has started every single game he has played for the Three Lions and reached the milestone in style as goals from Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard eased Roy Hodgson's side past the World Cup 2014 hosts.

Cole told BBC Sport: "When I got out there it wasn't about me anymore, it was about playing against a world-class team and trying to win at home in front of the fans.

"It was a good team performance, especially the second half to get the goals and I'm happy with the result.

"I was a little emotional at the start. I would once again like to thank the fans because I didn't really expect the reception I got, it was very nice.

"I'm actually delighted and overwhelmed, kind of speechless.

"I got so many text messages from ex-team-mates, ex-managers, it was nice to have my mum, my brother and all my friends here so it was a great night for me.

"To beat Brazil at home in a packed stadium, we haven't beat them for 23 years or something like that, so to do it in the way we did and have some great performances - it was a good result and a good night."

Cole was forced off at half-time with back and hamstring injuries, but allayed fears over his long-term fitness, claiming he would have been able to play on if required.

"It's not a big injury, just had a bit of a bad back and a tight hamstring but I said I would just play," he said.

"I'm getting on a bit, not going to lie! I was disappointed I had to come off. It was a great night for me, it was a great win and the lads have done well."

The 32-year-old heaped praise on fellow Arsenal academy graduate, Jack Wilshere, who turned in a man-of-the-match performance in midfield against the Selecao.

"Jack Wilshere was amazing," he beamed. "He's been impressive all season I think since he's come back from injury."
