Goal.com 50: Cristiano Ronaldo wins the fans' vote for best player of 2011-12

The Portuguese has completed a double, seeing off competition from Lionel Messi as the readers agreed with the editors' view that the Real Madrid man was the star of last season
Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the best player of the 2011-12 season by Goal.com fans after the Real Madrid forward topped Goal.com 50 and saw off Lionel Messi by over 14 per cent of the public vote in our poll.

The Barcelona star had been named the top player by Goal.com fans for the last two seasons but having secured 29.59 per cent of the vote this time round, the Argentine has been dethroned by Ronaldo, who won our poll with 43.26% of your backing.

In third was Didier Drogba who secured 11.48% of the vote after his Champions League and FA Cup-winning final season with Chelsea. The Ivorian was handed sixth place by our team of editors in Goal.com 50.

Andrea Pirlo secured fourth with 3.69% of the vote following his title-winning campaign with Juventus and a series of instrumental displays in midfield for Italy at Euro 2012.

Iker Casillas, who won La Liga with Real Madrid last season and Euro 2012 with Spain this summer, was handed second place in Goal.com 50 by our team of editors but could only manage fifth in the public poll with 3.62% of the votes.
