Real Madrid's Karim Benzema scores fastest-ever Clasico goal against Barcelona

The French striker benefited from Victor Valdes' poor clearance, but Alexis Sanchez levelled for the visitors later on in the first half
After just 22 seconds of play on Saturday evening, Karim Benzema made history as he scored the fastest-ever Clasico goal to give Real Madrid the lead against Barcelona.

From kick-off, play fell back to Victor Valdes but without pressure, the Barcelona goalkeeper scuffed his clearance into the path of Angel Di Maria whose rebounded shot fell to Mesut Ozil but the German international's first-time effort hit Gerard Pique before falling to Benzema who volleyed home.

Benzema follows former Barcelona winger Francisco Jose Carrasco during the 1987-88 season and ex-Madrid forward Enrique Mateos in the 1960-61 campaign, who both scored within a minute of a previous Primera Division meeting, while Giovanni scored for Real Madrid in a Supercopa clash during 1997-98.

A win for Real Madrid on Saturday would give them a significant six-point advantage over their Catalan rivals with a game in hand, while Barcelona could wipe out the deficit before heading off to compete in the Club World Cup.
