Olympique Lyonnais’ Michel Bastos could be the subject of a €12 million approach by Real Madrid, who are also willing to give les Gones Royston Drenthe in return for the Brazil international, according to L’Equipe.
Merengues boss Jose Mourinho reportedly wants a versatile left-sided player who is able to operate either in midfield or in defence. Bastos has proven emphatically he can do both, impressing with OL during their push to the Champions League semi-finals when he played as an attacking midfielder before looking almost equally at home as a left-back with the Selecao during the World Cup.
Mourinho is ready to offer €12m (£9.9m) for Bastos’ services, providing Lyon with a replacement in the form of Drenthe, who is a player previously linked to French football, albeit Paris Saint-Germain.
Already this summer Lyon have had to field rumours over the future of the former Lille star, and they have done so forcefully, indicating that Bastos is an integral part of their first team plans and is by no means for sale. However, los Blancos are a club that boast an appeal like few others, and player pressure may have a bearing on OL’s decision.
Even if Bastos were to sign for Madrid before the end of the transfer window, an injury would mean that he could not play until late September.
