Real Madrid have launched a second and final offer for Werder Bremen's talented midfielder Mesut Oezil. According to Marca, only an agreement with Werder is needed, and Los Blancos have increased their previous bid by €5 million (£4.01m), to €14m (£11.47m).

However, Werder are holding out for something closer to €18m (£14.75m), but will run the risk that the player will leave on a free next year when his contract expires if they don't accept.

Madrid are confident a deal will materialise and expect to make an official announcement either today or tomorrow.

After Madrid's intial bid, Oezil declared his disappointment to Bremen at denying him the opportunity to play for one of Europe's elite clubs. The midfielder's plea to director of sport Klaus Allofs to let him go has encouraged Madrid to step up their chase, and Oezil may get his wish sooner rather than later.

Oezil has been one of the hottest properties in the transfer market since his starring role for Germany at the World Cup, and has been strongly linked with the likes of Real, Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.
