Serie A Team of the Week: Kovacic shines as Zanetti says farewell

The best players from the penultimate round of action in the Italian top flight get their reward with a place in out top XI of the weekend

It was a fascinating weekend of farewells and long faces as Serie A began a long goodbye to some of its star names while at the bottom of the table the relegation issues were all resolved.

There were tears all round in Bologna as Catania's 2-1 win at the Dall'Ara couldn't stop both teams from dropping into Serie B. That was despite the excellent displays by Alberto Frison and Fabian Monzon, which helped the Sicilians to collect three ultimately futile points. Juan Cuadrado had more to celebrate, though, with his goal seeing Fiorentina past already relegated Livorno. Dario Dainelli went one better, scoring the only goal for Chievo at Cagliari to keep his side in the top flight, while Andrea Ranocchia again excelled as Inter hammered Lazio at San Siro.

Mateo Kovacic was at the heart of everything that went right on Saturday, as the Nerazzurri faithful waved farewell to Javier Zanetti in style, beating the Biancocelesti 4-1, and Jose Callejon instigated Napoli's sensational 5-2 win at Sampdoria. Emil Hallfredsson netted in Verona's 2-2 draw with Udinese, and Franco Brienza piled the pressure on AC Milan coach Clarence Seedorf with a 96th-minute winner for Atalanta.

Antonio Floro Flores struck a brace as Sassuolo secured a second season in Serie A with a 4-2 win over Genoa, while Rodrigo Palacio did his best to steal the headlines from his compatriot Zanetti as he scored twice in Inter's demolition of Lazio.
