Chesterfield sign former Arsenal and West Ham winger Boa Morte

The Derbyshire club have pulled off one of the coups of the season by securing the services of the 35-year-old Portuguese international on a short-term contract

League Two outfit Chesterfield have completed the surprise signing of Portuguese winger Luis Boa Morte.

The 35-year-old former Arsenal, Fulham and West Ham winger has joined the club on a short-term deal that will keep him at the club until January.

Boa Morte, who made 28 appearances for Portugal during his career, was convinced to join the third-tier side following a meeting with former Cottagers' team-mate and current Chesterfield assistant boss Mark Crossley.

He told the club’s official website: "[Crossley] asked me if I'd fancy coming up to Chesterfield and it went from there.

"The most important thing for me now is to play football and get going again. I'll be here until the end of January but that doesn't mean that I won't stay until the end of the season."

Spireites manager Tommy Wright was quick to express his delight at finalising a deal for the midfield veteran.

He said: "To have a player of Luis' quality coming to Chesterfield is a fantastic coup for us. It's great that a player of his ability wants to play football. The financial aspect of the deal was no worry - he just wanted to come and play."

Boa Morte's presence will add a wealth of experience to a Chesterfield side that is looking to bounce back from relegation from League One at the first attempt.

The Portuguese has made over 300 appearances in English football, including winning the Premier League and FA Cup with Arsenal in 1998.
