French amateur club refuses to sign gay player - report

An amateur French football club is at the centre of a homophobia row after refusing to register a gay player, according to Associated Press.

Yoann Lemaire had played for FC Chooz for 14 years, but the club are now refusing to register him so that there is no "trouble" with his team-mates, although French Junior Sports Minister Rama Yade has questioned their decision.

Chooz have been criticised by leading gay football organisation Paris Foot Gay, who reportedly called for punishment "to help the football world to realize that homophobia is as bad as racism and anti-Semitism".

Yade has echoed the sentiments of Paris Foot Gay and called for action to be taken against the side.
