A Kris Commons brace gave Celtic a comfortable 2-0 win over Hamilton Academical at Celtic Park as they increased their lead at the top of the SPL to eight points over Rangers while the Accies lie seven points off St Mirren at the bottom having played a game more.
Celtic began the game well and Scott Brown’s cross was nearly turned in by Simon Mensing but fortunately for him it went out for a corner and from the resulting set-piece Anthony Stoke’s left-footed shot went just over as the Bhoys looked to take the game to Hamilton.
The SPL’s bottom side were not going to sit back and absorb pressure and could have taken the lead through Carrington whose shot was deflected wide for a corner when it looked destined for the net after he received the ball from McCallister who did extremely well to get the ball across from the right.
Neil Lennon’s side responded and Stokes was again guilty of missing a good opportunity as Charlie Mulgrew’s pinpoint cross left him in acres of space at the back post but he could not direct his volley goalwards.
The SPL leaders had to wait until the 43rd minute until they took the lead through Commons, who received the ball from Brown after Ki Sung-Yong had fallen into his path and the former Derby man unleashed a 20-yard shot a goal which flew past Tomas Cerny in the Hamilton goal.
In the second haf Commons got his second of the game in the 52nd minute when Hamilton defender Elebert passed the ball across the box his18-yard box straight to Commons, and he made no mistake stroking the ball into the corner past Cerny.
Celtic pressed for a third but were met with a resilience from Billy Reid’s side as Georgios Samaras and Beram Kayal were thwarted so the Bhoys were forced to settle for a two-goal win which leaves them eight points clear of Rangers at the top of the SPL.
