Martin Skrtel lauds Wembley atmosphere after Liverpool's League Cup win

Kenny Dalglish's man required a penalty shootout to secure victory over Cardiff City on Sunday, and the defender believes his side can secure more silverware
Martin Skrtel has lauded the atmosphere at Wembley following Liverpool's League Cup victory over Cardiff City.

Kenny Dalglish’s men emerged victors after a dramatic penalty shootout at Wembley saw Steven Gerrard’s cousin, Anthony Gerrard, miss the decisive spot-kick for the Championship side.

Skrtel’s second-half strike cancelled out Joe Mason's 19th-minute opener before Dirk Kuyt and Ben Turner both netted in extra time to ensure the match ended at 2-2.

"It was great game in such a beautiful stadium." Skrtel told Sky Sports. “The atmosphere was unbelievable with the fans from Liverpool and the fans from Cardiff.

"For me it was a great game after going 1-0 down and winning on penalties. I think we deserved the win."

Skrtel believes Liverpool should now use their League Cup success as a platform to secure further silverware this season.

"It wasn't easy because there was just two minutes to go. We just tried to get our heads up and take it to penalties.

"Finally we won the game and we're delighted but I cannot tell you what I was thinking [after Liverpool had missed their first two penalties]. That's just football you know but I'm happy we won it.

"I think everybody plays football for the trophies and that was our first one and I hope there will be more and more."
