The White Hart Lane outfit took a 2-1 lead in the first leg but Les Gones claimed a crucial away goal courtesy of Samuel Umtiti and are confident of qualifying for the next round

Lyon boss Remi Garde is optimistic about his side's chances of progressing to the last 16 of the Europa League when they face Tottenham on Thursday evening.

Spurs go to the Stade de Gerland with a slender 2-1 first-leg lead courtesy of two brilliant free kicks at the end of each half from Gareth Bale.

But, with home advantage and an away goal thanks to Samuel Umtiti's wonder-strike at White Hart Lane, Garde believes that his team can overcome the north London club.

"We know the away goal is very important," said the 46-year-old Lyon boss at the pre-match press conference.

"We need to be patient. We have 90 minutes to qualify. It will be difficult but we can try to close them down and try to cut out their speed.

"To be able to qualify in front of the home fans would be exciting. We won last weekend [4-0 away to Bordeaux] so we have a better mentality now."

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is expecting a stern test in France but has faith in his side's ability to preserve their lead.

"We face a tough, tough team, it will be difficult for us, but we are focused," the Portuguese told reporters.

"Lyon will be up for it. They have recognised that we are good away from home and we expect a tough match. They have a lot of experience in Europe but we have confidence."
