Tottenham remain on course to sign Jan Vertonghen from Ajax despite the departure of Harry Redknapp, understands.

Spurs are confident they will land the centre-back even though the identity of the club’s new manager is unknown.

Sources have told that the club’s pursuit of Vertonghen will continue and is “unrelated” to Redknapp, who was sacked on Wednesday.

The Belgian defender has already agreed personal terms with Spurs after a trip to London in which he was shown around the club’s new training centre in Enfield and was a guest of the club at their last match of the season, a 2-0 home win over Fulham.

But Spurs and Ajax are yet to reach an agreement on a transfer fee, with the Londoners unwilling to match the Dutch club’s €15 million (£12.1m) valuation of the player.
25/1 Tottenham are 25/1 with Paddy Power to win the Premier League next season.

Nevertheless, all parties remain confident that the transfer will be completed even though Vertonghen remains in limbo.

The 24-year-old told last month: “I’m just waiting for it to be done. I understand the situation and I have to be patient. I am not at the Euros but I hope it will be done soon after.

“There are still other clubs interested but I will wait. Tottenham is an amazing club and are the team I like to join the most.”

Spurs are unwilling to offer more than £9.6m for the defender, who has only a year remaining on his contract.
